Navigating the Festive Season with a Chronic Condition

As we head into the festive season, December often becomes a month filled with celebrations, parties, and social gatherings.

For many, it’s a joyful time. But for others, especially those living with a long-term condition, it can also bring pressure to keep up, to say yes to every event, and worry that if they don’t, they might be left out in the future.

PATIENT INSIGHT OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD

Sarah, who lives with Crohn’s disease, shared with us:

“Last Christmas, I was living with friends, and they were going out every night for drinks. But I was having a flare-up of Crohn’s and was absolutely exhausted. I had to tell them I couldn’t keep joining them, which meant I missed out on a lot of fun things.”

Sarah’s words highlight something we often overlook: the festive season can bring invisible pressures as well as visible joy. Behind the laughter and twinkly lights, many people are quietly balancing their health, their limits, and their need to stay connected.

By listening to and understanding these lived experiences, we gain deeper insights into what really matters, which leads to better outcomes for everyone.

This December, we’re reminded to celebrate in ways that feel right for each of us and to make space for understanding, compassion, and connection beyond the dance floor or dinner table.

Wishing everyone a peaceful festive season, wherever and however you choose to spend it.
