September marks Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month and is the perfect time to pause and reflect on what we do every day, whatever role that may be in healthcare. While as an industry we focus on medical advancements, and rightly so, it is the personal stories and community efforts that can often provide the most eye-opening insights into the day-to-day challenges of pulmonary fibrosis (PF). These are the stories that bring understanding, provide deeper insights, and are a catalyst for change.
The story of Clive and Sue is a powerful reminder of this. Clive was diagnosed pulmonary fibrosis in 2009, and when we spoke to them in creating our Pulmonary Fibrosis experience, we learned they recognised a gap in the support they received and took action. They started the Tameside Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group in 2018 to create a space for people to connect, share experiences, and support one another. Filling an important care gap, the group provides crucial emotional support, practical advice, and a sense of community for patients, their families, and friends.
Following Clive’s passing, their combined advocacy and the work within the group illustrates how genuine understanding can lead to meaningful change that goes beyond medicine. We’ve found through our patient community that the emotional burden of any disease can be overwhelming, and by sharing the need for constant adaptations to life and the struggles that come with the progression of a condition. These personal experiences are bringing to light changes that professionals can make to drive better outcomes for patients.
Together, stories like Clive and Sue’s remind us that real change begins with empathy, courage, and connection. By listening to and learning from the patient voice, we can fuel progress that not only advances medicine but truly transforms lives. Let’s keep driving forward with purpose, ensuring every step we take makes a difference for those living with pulmonary fibrosis.
